چکیده

Characters and properties of dislocations in ice are thoroughly reviewed on the basis of the knowledge hitherto obtained by the X-ray topographic method as well as recently found dynamical behavior. Extremely low energy of the faults on the basal plane found by the method leads us to conclude that all of the dislocations in ice should be extended as wide as several tens to one hundred nano-meter, depending upon their Burgers vectors, on the basal plane. The motion of dislocations, therefore, is severely restricted on the basal plane. The strong anisotropy of plastic deformation of ice single crystal is interpreted in terms of this restriction; i.e., the primary slip caused by glide motion of the (1/3)<1120> dislocations on (0001) is a unique easy slip system in ice because glide planes of the other dislocations do not coincide with their extended plane or the basal plane. It is also shown that the secondary slip system <1120>/{1010} is due to glide motion of the constricted (1/3)<1120> dislocations on the-prismatic planes {lOTO). Since only very short segments can glide on {1010) owing 'to the tendency of the dislocations to lie on (0001), this slip system is far less easier than the primary one in spite of larger velocities of the segments than the basal Article published online by EDP Sciences and available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1051/jphyscol:1987124

Plastic anisotropy and associated deformation mechanisms in nanotwinned metals

Anisotropic plastic deformation in columnar-grained copper in which preferentially oriented nanoscale twins are embedded is studied by experimental testing, crystal plasticity modeling and molecular dynamics simulations. The dominant deformation mechanism can be effectively switched among three dislocation modes, namely dislocation glide in between the twins, dislocation transfer across twin bo...

The Effect of Deformation Temperature on the Mechanical Properties and Microstructural Evolutions of High Manganese TWIP Steel

In this study, the effect of tensile test temperature (148 to 673 K) on the microstructural evolutions and the mechanical properties of high manganese twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) steel with the chemical composition of Fe- 31Mn-3Al-3Si (wt. %) was investigated. XRD, SEM and TEM were used to study the microstructural evolutions. Stacking fault energy (SFE) of the alloy was also calculated ...

Plastic deformation recovery in freestanding nanocrystalline aluminum and gold thin films.

In nanocrystalline metals, lack of intragranular dislocation sources leads to plastic deformation mechanisms that substantially differ from those in coarse-grained metals. However, irrespective of grain size, plastic deformation is considered irrecoverable. We show experimentally that plastically deformed nanocrystalline aluminum and gold films with grain sizes of 65 nanometers and 50 nanometer...

Atomistic mechanisms of intermittent plasticity in metals: dislocation avalanches and defect cluster pinning.

Intermittent plastic deformation in crystals with power-law behaviors has been reported in previous experimental studies. The power-law behavior is reminiscent of self-organized criticality, and mesoscopic models have been proposed that describe this behavior in crystals. In this paper, we show that intermittent plasticity in metals under tensile deformation can be observed in molecular dynamic...

Mechanisms of plastic deformation of icosahedral quasicrystals

Icosahedral quasicrystals deform plastically by dislocation motion. The deformation behaviour can be modelled by simple equations of dislocation mobility, the damage of the quasicrystal structure and the kinetics of dislocation evolution, but fundamental questions are still discussed, like the mode of dislocation motion (glide or climb) and the role of phason defects. 2003 Acta Materialia Inc. ...
